A birth chart is a map of where every planet sat in the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It is calculated from three things: your birth date, your birth time, and your birth city. Astrologers read it as a description of temperament and pattern rather than a forecast of events.

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Because the horizon moves through all twelve signs every twenty-four hours, it changes roughly every two hours, which is why it needs an accurate birth time to calculate.

You need your date of birth, your time of birth, and the city you were born in. Without a birth time you can still see every planet in its sign, but not your rising sign or your houses, since both depend on the exact minute.

Start with the Sun, Moon and rising sign, then read the aspects. The Sun is what you are working toward, the Moon is how you process feeling, and the rising sign is how you meet the world. Aspects are the angles between planets, and they describe where those parts of you cooperate and where they pull against each other.
